The electrician who was electrocuted in the ceiling of a home in Westering, Port Elizabeth, yesterday, has been identified as ex-police sergeant Uyslen Nel who shot and killed his wife and children 19 years ago.

Nel, 46, was believed to have been repairing wiring for a client when he was electrocuted at about 3pm yesterday.

In February 1996 Nel shot and killed his wife, Natasha, 25, and their two sons Marius, 4, and Robin, 2, on the road between Despatch and Uitenhage. He initially told police the car had broken down and his family was shot while he went looking for help.

It emerged later the then 27-year-old was unhappy in his marriage and had suffered stress as a result of work. He admitted to shooting his family with an AK-47 and was sentenced to three separate terms of life in prison.

We will have more on this story in The Herald tomorrow.
