FROM this month, 86 Nelson Mandela Bay councillors who owe the municipality more than half a million rands in outstanding cellphone bills, will have to pay back the money.

They have been given until May next year – the month when the municipal elections are expected to take place – to pay the R561 385 accumulated between February and May, when metro officials failed to deduct the money from their salaries.

This is over and above the monthly cellphone allowances of R1 700 for ordinary councillors and R3 400 for mayoral committee councillors.

While the majority owe an average of about R7 000 in outstanding bills, one councillor owes R19 183 and another R15 981.
