A FISHING trip almost ended in disaster for two Port Elizabeth brothers, who were rescued after their rubber duck was smashed against the dolosse at the Port of Ngqura.

The dramatic rescue unfolded on Saturday afternoon when businessman Francois Putter, 50, who owns Titan Waterproofing, and his brother, Andre, 47, went fishing on their 6m rubber duck near the mouth of the harbour.

The brothers started their trip at the Swartkops River Mouth at about 11am, before moving closer to the outskirts of the harbour.

“One of us usually keeps a lookout and steers the boat while the other fishes. We take turns fishing,” Francois Putter said yesterday.

“The rubber duck was drifting near to the dolosse, so we kept steering away. But all of a sudden the motor cut out.

“The next thing the swells were pushing us against the dolosse.”

Francois Putter managed to make a phone call to a relative.
