A DOUBLE tragedy was averted when a Westering resident’s two dassie-mad dachshunds were rescued from a collapsed tunnel after they had been trapped underground for about four hours.
Renee Daniell, 43, was taking six-year-old Brody and four-year-old Levi for a walk on Christmas Day when the dogs chased after what is thought to have been a dassie – something they had done before.
Only this time, the adventurous hounds ran into a collapsed tunnel and were soon covered with rubble, mud, cement blocks and other debris that had come tumbling down.
“At first, I thought they were being stubborn and didn’t want to return to me,” Daniell said.
“Then I got angry and continued to call them. As time went on and they still didn’t appear, I started to cry.”
The incident took place near the quarry in Salem Road.
Daniell said she had discovered the spot about a year ago and regularly took the dogs there to have a bit of fun.
