Despite sweltering heat and the obvious danger of a huge herd of elephants nearby, rangers at the Addo Elephant National Park successfully saved a baby elephant that got stuck in a deep ditch near Hapoor Dam on Sunday.

SANParks spokeswoman Fayroush Ludick said, on Sunday, ranger Michael Paxton got a call from a guide at Gorah Lodge, a private 5-star lodge in the park,  saying there was a small elephant calf stuck in a wallow at  Hapoor Dam.

At the time there were about 200 elephant at the dam and rangers chased them off to get to the baby. Paxton and one of the park’s dog handlers, Vusumsi Nxamleko,  climbed into the waterlogged hole to tie a rope around the little elephant.

It took two attempts to pull the baby elephant from the ditch.

Read more about the daring rescue mission and how rangers then helped the baby elephant find his mom in The Herald.
