Options offered for unlucky candidates

MANY matric pupils will be popping champagne corks today in celebration of a successful year – but some who have not achieved the results they hoped for face the uncertainty of how to proceed.

And while repeating a grade can be embarrassing, pupils need to know that it is an option and one of the smartest decisions anyone who has failed matric can make.

Independent Institute of Education (IIE) executive Nola Payne advised matriculants to look at failure as a chance to think clearly about what they wanted to do.

“If pupils don’t want to repeat the grade, they can apply for a supplementary exam and see if they can improve their marks,” Payne said.

“Our higher education system also allows for what used to be called bridging courses – pupils can do a higher certificate at a college for a year.

“The higher certificate qualifies them [to study] for a degree the next year.”

Revive director Susan Potgieter said it was very important for parents to support failed candidates and not judge them.

Revive, previously known as LifeLine, can be reached at (041) 373-8882/3.
