THERE were hugs, smiles and even the occasional selfie at schools in Port Elizabeth’s suburbs yesterday when pupils returned to receive their Grade 12 examination results.
With the results already available from midnight, most students lined up outside school halls, chatting excitedly about the marks they were expecting, rather than having nervous discussions about passing or failing.
Pearson High School principal Andre van Staden said: “We are very excited about our results. I have been headmaster for 11 years, and we have achieved 100% every year.
“Not only did we achieve a 100% pass rate this year, but 94% of our pupils qualified for bachelor studies.”
The school’s two top achievers, Emma Finestone and Alisa Louw, both 18, were invited to attend the province’s gala event in East London.
Grey High School and Collegiate Girls High also boasted 100% pass rates.
Collegiate pupil Christie Morley, 18, enjoyed a glass of champagne with her father and a few friends outside the school grounds.
While she plans to have some subjects re-marked, she was mostly happy with her results, while her father, Chris, was ecstatic.
“All my children have now finished school. I am proud of Christie and what she has achieved,” he said.
Grey principal Neil Crawford commended pupils and staff for “their commitment and remarkable work ethic”.
Grey head boy and former first team rugby captain Michael de Marco, 18, said: “I feel pretty good and achieved four As.”
De Marco leaves today for Italy, where he will join an Italian rugby academy, but he plans to study a BCom in accounting through Unisa.
Grey top achiever Jason Evezard, 18, said he was very happy to receive eight distinctions.
Theodor Herzl achieved a perfect pass for the 39th consecutive year, a statistic of which the smaller school, with 31 matriculants, is very proud.
Head of department Adina Pieters said every pupil had qualified to study for a university degree.
Victoria Park High School principal Mike Vermaak said their results were a bit frustrating with just one out of 200 pupils not passing Grade 12.
“Hopefully, we can have his papers’ re-marked, giving him the pass he needs and helping us achieve our 100% pass rate,” he said.
Alexander Road High School principal Peter Manser was happy with his school’s 99.1% pass rate.
Framesby High School achieved a 98.7% pass rate.
