THE Eastern Cape Department of Education has deployed the remaining 4 000 teachers from its post-provisioning basket.

This will not help schools forced to cater for pupils whose parents registered them late.

The department allocated 54 747 teachers for this year in November, but held back on the 4 000 posts. Department spokesman Malibongwe Mtima said the 4 000 were primarily growth and intervention posts.

“The determining issue when it comes to the appointment of educators is learner numbers.

“Schools have to submit learner numbers after admissions have been completed between May and July.

“The department then determines the budget for the school based on these numbers.

“By September 30 the MEC must declare the post basket. However, some posts are held back for intervention purposes.

“We are looking at providing more teachers at schools where there is only one educator or where there is multi-grade teaching. We are trying to do away with multi-grade teaching,” he said.
