IF A picture paints 1000 words, a selfie with a celebrity must be worth a thousand autographs, and one Port Elizabeth journalist had the opportunity to grow his celeb-selfie collection when he attended one of the world’s most prestigious film awards ceremonies on Sunday.

Hillside-born entertainment writer Clayton Morar, 31, was invited by American media company NBC Universal and had the opportunity to rub shoulders with Hollywood’s most famous at the 2016 Golden Globes, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

“The trip itself was a combination of work and holiday, and something I had been planning for a few months,” Morar said.

“On the evening of the 73rd Golden Globes, NBC Universal hosted a viewing party, where invited guests watched the ceremony live on the rooftop of the Beverly Hilton Hotel, while the actual ceremony was taking place in the ballroom downstairs.”

After matriculating from Alexander Road High School and studying journalism at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Morar cultivated his love for celeb news and entertainment writing while working at TV Plus magazine in Cape Town.

In 2012 he started his own public relations company, working with a number of celebrities and event organising companies, growing his contact list through which he landed a spot on NBC Universal’s list.

According to Morar, the sheer size of the event was incredible, with tight security, swarms of photographers and flashing lights, and celebrities showing up with stylists, managers and entourages and making their way down the red carpet.

“Seeing the magnitude of this event with my very own eyes was mind blowing to say the least.

“The energy at an awards show like the Golden Globes is electric.

The world’s biggest stars all make their way onto the red carpet.”

After the ceremony, Morar chatted to big names like Katy Perry, Kate Hudson and Tyrese Gibson as they hopped from one party at the Beverly Hilton to another.

“I managed to get up close and personal and speak to them and take selfies,” he said. “A lot of the celebs were quite pleased to hear I was from South Africa, and many told me how much they lovedour country.

“Toni Braxton was lovely and told me how much she enjoyed performing in South Africa last year. “When Ian Somerhalder heard I was from South Africa he replied: ‘

I love South Africa, that’s so lekker, bru’.”

Morar said Selena Gomez was “very sweet and humble” and posed with many fans as she made her way down the red carpet, and he also managed to snap selfies with Queen Latifah, Toni Braxton, Nicole Scherzinger and Jamie Foxx. “Despite the frenetic craziness of the entire event, the celebs seemed down to earth and happy to interact with others.

Attending the event was one of the most memorable
