Historic King Edward back in business after four-year closure for renovations

AFTER a four-year closure, Nelson Mandela Bay’s landmark King Edward Hotel has once again opened its doors to the public and promises its clientele even better services than before.

The hotel, situated in Belmont Terrace and overlooking the Donkin Reserve in the city centre, was built in 1903.

It was bought by Dubai Sheikh Whalaf Aotaiba in 2009.

It has since undergone massive renovations to its entrance area, corridors and rooms.

Renovations are still continuing in some parts of the building.

Hotel manager Hassam Nazeim said that in renovating the hotel, they did not want to completely lose its historical beauty.

“So far renovations have been done in the hotel’s entrance, corridors and the rooms,” Nazeim said.

“We have bought new furniture but we kept the old furniture so that we don’t lose touch with the history of the hotel.

“What makes us unique is that we have magnificent views of both the city and the harbour.”

Walking through the hotel, guests are greeted with a friendly reception. The reception area has marble tiles and stylish couches.
