Two Soweto men transporting R5.4-million worth of mandrax tablets in hidden compartments in their bakkie were arrested on the Garden Route over the weekend.

Bethuel Malebo, whose real surname is Mzinyane, 50, and his passenger, Kenny Kenneth Sithole, 63, appeared in the Uniondale Magistrate’s Court earlier today after being arrested during a routine stop-and-search road block on the N9 near Tsitsikamma.

Hawks spokesman Lieutenant Robert Netshiunda said that preliminary investigations had revealed that Mzinyane was on the wanted list for suspected drug dealing.

“The Organised Crime unit of the Hawks together with the Tsitsikamma K9 Unit were doing their routine stop- and-search when they stopped a white bakkie travelling from Johannesburg to Cape Town.

“Upon searching the vehicle Hawks members discovered drugs hidden on top of the gearbox, on top of the chassis as well as many other compartments underneath the vehicle. R16 800 in cash was also found in the suspects’ possession,” he said.

Netshiunda said Mzinyane had two previous convictions for theft, both in the Gauteng area.

Both men will appear in the same court on Wednesday for a bail application.
