Party seeks tough action against Roberts over ‘bobbejaan’ row

THE ANC has launched a hate speech case in the Equality Court’s Port Elizabeth division, calling for a hefty sanction against DA councillor Chris Roberts.

Roberts called the UDM’s Mongameli Bobani a “bobbejaan” (baboon) during a Nelson Mandela Bay council meeting last year.

ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe said the ANC had brought the application because, as the ruling party, it had a moral and legal duty to prevent racial conflict.

He said the ANC represented the aspirations of the majority of black, Indian, coloured and progressive whites in South Africa. The ANC wants the court to:

  • Declare Roberts’s utterances racist and for it to constitute hate speech as defined in the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act;
