A NELSON Mandela Bay police warrant officer is under investigation for allegedly firing four shots into his Walmer Heights townhouse ceiling before threatening to kill himself and his girlfriend.
The standoff happened at the D’Laqua complex in Liszt Avenue at about 10.30pm on Tuesday when the officer, who is based at Uitenhage police station, had an argument with his girlfriend.
Officials on the scene said the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute regarding the officer’s ex-wife.
The off-duty policeman was not arrested but taken to hospital for mental observation and treatment.
Several police officers were called to the scene. The officer threatened to shoot himself and his girlfriend if they tried to take his gun.
Hostage negotiators were sent to the scene. The man, however, surrendered and handed over his firearm before they arrived.
Police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu confirmed that a case of discharging a firearm was under investigation.
“The warrant officer was not arrested and he is not at work,” she said.
On Tuesday, a 33-year-old constable shot himself in the leg by accident while leaving a vehicle at the police offices in Struanway, Struandale.
The constable was taken to hospital and an internal investigation into negligence is under way.
