ALMOST two years after the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is alleged to have last collected its refuse, New Brighton’s Kama Primary School is drowning in waste.

It has resorted to burning the refuse as it piles up.

This was revealed yesterday by a teacher during a cleanup initiative by DA Bay mayoral hopeful Athol Trollip.

The teacher, who did not want to be named for fear of being associated with the opposition party, said staff were concerned about the health hazard caused by the refuse.

“When we approached the municipality to assist, they said we would have to pay R40 for each bag of rubbish, and we cannot afford that.

“So we resort to burning the waste ourselves and that is not good for the environment.”

Yesterday’s cleanup was organised after public health executive director Andile Tolom told ward councillors that there would be a temporary suspension of litter projects in communities.

Last year, mayor Danny Jordaan promised there would be weekly refuse collections as his administration hoped to curb illegal dumping.
