BAWINILE Ndlovu has been appointed interim chief executive of Dora Nginza Hospital until an independent investigation against chief executive Dr Ntombi Qangule has been completed.

Ndlovu, a member of the SA Nursing Council, is district hospitals senior manager in the Eastern Cape Department of Health.

The province’s clinical management services deputy director-general, Dr Patrick Maduna, said service delivery had been negatively affected since February 3 because of labour unrest over Qangule.

Qangule was then placed on leave pending an investigation into allegations of mismanagement at the facility.

The crisis at the hospital started two weeks ago when the provincial health portfolio committee undertook a two-day oversight visit to the hospital.

In meetings that ran into the night, union representatives, doctors and nurses discussed problems at the hospital and complaints against Qangule which included mismanagement and extreme shortages of staff and equipment.

When the department presented a rescue plan, the labour unions refused to agree to it, saying Qangule must be removed.
