HUNDREDS of Nelson Mandela Bay residents gathered at Kings Beach last night for a peaceful vigil and march against crime following the brutal murder of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) student Asadullah Ajimudin.

Ajimudin, 19, was left in a coma after being beaten during a robbery in his Summerstrand flatlet last weekend. He died in St George’s Hospital on Tuesday.

One of the organisers behind last night’s march, Shaheedah Abrahams of Families Against Drugs (FAD), said while the march was motivated by Ajimudin’s death, they wanted to look at the “bigger picture”.

“We want to create an overall awareness for the safety and security of all who reside in the metro and particularly for the students who live in Summerstrand,” she said.

Toni Inggs, sister of Port Elizabeth school teacher Jayde Panayiotou, who was murdered in April, allegedly on her husband’s instruction, also attended.

“Although we are wearing our #justiceforJAYDE shirts, we are here to support all families and people that are in this situation. I strongly believe that we need to unite as a community, and that’s what we are doing here tonight,” she said.

A memorandum was handed over to Humewood police station commander Brigadier Ronald Koll.
