THE Phumulo Masualle-led provincial government will inject R5-billion into resurfacing and rehabilitating Eastern Cape roads this year, including two connected to Port Elizabeth.

Work will be done on the R334 in Motherwell and the R63 between Port Elizabeth and Tsitsikamma.

An additional R162-million will be spent on reviving Port St Johns, once considered the jewel of the Wild Coast.

Spokesman Sizwe Kupelo made these announcements a day after Masualle and his executive council spent two days in East London identifying priorities for this year.

About R3.5-billion is being spent on road construction in the province, the biggest R942-million for a project on the R61 between Mzamba and Magusheni in Mbizana.

Public Works spokesman Mphumzi Zuzile said all the province’s 45 municipalities had been asked to submit five priority roads they wanted resurfaced or tarred.

Kupelo said a budget needed to revive Port St Johns had been presented at a legkotla on Tuesday.

Money would also be spent on the town’s sewerage system, electrification and on its stormwater drains.
