Power cut for maintenance

PLANNED maintenance by Eskom saw a number of seaside towns in Kouga Municipality without power for the entire day on Saturday.

Eskom announced last week it would be switching off the electricity supply to the whole Kouga municipal area from 5am until 6pm on Saturday. This was done for maintenance and repairs. But business owners and residents said the electricity was only completely restored at around 8pm, two hours later than originally announced.

Towns affected by Saturday’s outage included Jeffreys Bay, Humansdorp, St Francis Bay, Cape St Francis, Oyster Bay, Patensie, Hankey, Loerie and Thornhill.

Lois Fox of St Francis Bay said: “We did receive a fair bit of warning and it did not bother me that much. The only problem was that I think the outage affected the cellphone towers as no one I know had cellphone reception.”

A guest house owner in Jeffreys Bay, who asked not to be named, said while the outage was inconvenient, he believed planned maintenance work was important.

Kouga municipality spokeswoman Laura-Leigh Randall said the shutdown was necessary for Eskom to continue work they started on January 23.
