Hail of bullets fired in busy Gelvandale street

FIVE men were wounded in a hail of gunfire during a brazen gangrelated attack in Port Elizabeth’s northern areas yesterday. In two other gang-related incidents in the northern areas yesterday, a man was shot dead and another was wounded.

The attack on the five men took place outside a house with CCTV cameras mounted at its entrance in Gelvandale’s bustling Borchard Street at 2.40pm.

Police said a group of men – some standing outside the house and others seated in a car – were fired on in a drive-by shooting. All were taken to hospital. A small section of road directly in front of the house was littered with bullet casings. About 15 could be seen on the road, while others were closer to the house.

The road was also littered with the remains of the smashed windscreen of the vehicle.

A witness, who refused to identify himself, said a group of men joined a party at the home before the shooting broke out.

“Some were sitting in a car parked outside of the house and some were standing near the car.

“The car that the shooters were in passed the house a few times.
