A CAR chase and shootout in Motherwell ended in the arrest of two people and the recovery of a hijacked vehicle.
Police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said when members of the Port Elizabeth Flying Squad on patrol tried to pull over a Volkswagen Polo TSI on Saturday, the driver sped off.
“A high-speed chase ensued, during which the occupants of the Polo opened fire on the officers, leading to a shootout,” Naidu said. The suspects allegedly threw a firearm out of the vehicle during the chase.
The Polo crashed into a wall and the occupants fled, but were soon arrested.
“It turned out the vehicle . . . had been hijacked in KwaDwesi earlier,” Naidu said. The two people arrested are facing charges of possession of a hijacked vehicle and illegal possession of a firearm .
In a separate incident the same day, Flying Squad members recovered another VW Polo TSI which had been abandoned in Motherwell after being hijacked from the Mount Road area earlier.
