A NORTHERN areas businesswoman and passionate anti-abuse activist, Juanita Smith, is expected to be sworn in as COPE’s new PR councillor today.

Smith, 50, replaces former councillor Monde Mtanga, who died last month after suffering a heart attack at the Baywest Mall.

The mother of four from Bethelsdorp is a former community police forum member and former school governing body chairwoman of Strelitzia Primary School.

She joined COPE in 2008. “I’m very passionate about the rights of women and children. I volunteered with the SAPS for five years on the community police forum,” Smith said.

“I have done a lot of motivational speaking on physical abuse and alcohol abuse. “For the past 15 years, I’ve been in catering and sewing. That is for me to be able to put food on the table.
