MOTORISTS in Zwide had to be redirected yesterday morning as a group of protesters barricaded a road with burning tyres.

The protesters are demanding that Ward 25 councillor Mfundo Vena resign immediately, claiming he is causing divisions.

“There is a project taking place here at Dora Nginza [Hospital] and Vena has only signed referral letters for his own people from New Brighton,” a protester said.

“There is not a single person from the Zwide side who is part of the projects.”

Community leader Desmond Gawula said: “There is a lack of communication between the councillor and the community.

“There are projects coming to Ward 25 that this community wants to be part of. For instance, when Kenako Mall in Zwide was built, they [Zwide residents] were left out,” Gawula said.

“There are a lot of renovations and building at Dora Nginza and for phase 1 and phase 2 Zwide people also did not benefit.”

Vena said not everybody could be employed at the same time, but jobs were being provided for Zwide residents at Dora Nginza.
