AN NMMU student is building a giant float that will form part of the Redd’s Street Carnival in Port Elizabeth next Saturday.
Mphumzeni Gwazela, 30, is putting the finishing touches to his giant 1.5m x 3m draught glass filled with apples.
With a masters in fine art, Gwazela said he was honoured to be given a platform to showcase his talent.
Cans, galvanised wire, metal, wood and spray paint have been used to build the float so far.
Gwazela met the carnival organisers last year and was asked to submit a design. “I sent a lot of ideas but eventually they approved the giant glass on a wooden stand with apples.”
With the help of three other artists, Khanyile Mgqwanci, 28, Thabo Ngodwane, 24, and Pumlile Rawana, 25, work on the float started a week ago.
Redd’s South Africa spokeswoman, Michelle Pavkovich, said the company encouraged skills development by supporting young talent. “We are proud to support the brilliant individuals who make our nation beautiful. We can’t wait to see the final product,” she said.
The Redd’s Street Carnival will start at NMMU’s 2nd Avenue Campus.
