“I WAS shocked when this came to light. I heard no screaming, no crying, or any sign that there was anything wrong.”

This was said by the manageress of the modest Port Elizabeth city centre building where police and forensic pathology services, in a grisly find last week, uncovered a chest freezer full of foetuses.

Thursday’s early-evening raid on the Govan Mbeki Avenue building came as a result of a long-term and ongoing police investigation into illegal abortions in Nelson Mandela Bay.

The building is situated in a bustling area of the city centre and within reach of a number of municipal offices and the Main Post Office building,

Police, who arrested a woman at the scene, have refused to provide more details, saying the investigation is still under way and at a sensitive stage.

The metro’s urban areas have long contended with a proliferation of stickers advertising abortions.

But it was Dora Nginza Hospital which raised the alarm and sparked the investigation in 2014 after finding itself under increasing pressure to treat women and girls whose illegal abortions had gone horribly wrong.

Speaking in front of the building late last week, the manageress declined to be named, saying she did not want to become associated with any alleged wrongdoings of her tenant and because of potential impacts on her livelihood.
