DA is ready to govern Nelson Mandela Bay, mayoral candidate tells audience
TO an audience of about 200 mostly elderly people, Nelson Mandela Bay DA mayoral candidate Athol Trollip yesterday delivered a speech he termed the state of the metro address.
The event was held at Port Elizabeth’s Little Theatre and Athenaeum.
He started off by apologising for only having male leaders on the panel – MPLs Marshall von Bochenroeder, Bobby Stevenson and Edmund van Vuuren, MP Nqaba Bhanga, Bay DA caucus leader Retief Odendaal and councillor Jonathan Lawack.
“I promise you that when we do win this city I will not have an allmale mayoral cabinet,” he said to applause. “We do learn as we go along.” Before the address, the crowd was shown a video of the Western Cape where some of the provincial government successes like its public transport system and a water treatment centre were highlighted.
When he took to the podium, Trollip told those in attendance that the DA was ready to govern.
Mindful of his mixed audience, he spoke mostly in English, mixing it with isiXhosa and Afrikaans.
Highlighting some of the metro’s failures like its Integrated Public Transport System, bucket toilets, high unemployment and poor general service delivery, Trollip had his audience in shock.
