A 33-year-old man appeared in the Gelvandale Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of defeating the ends of justice.

It is alleged that on Sunday, Simphiwe Prins Payi reported to police that he was hijacked the previous night and his white Ford Icon stolen in Gail Road.

A case of car hijacking was then opened. Payi alleged that he was held at gunpoint while at the robots in Gail Road and forced out of his vehicle.

According to police, investigations revealed that no such incident took place as the incident could not be captured on the CCTV footage.

SAPS spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said that Payi’s vehicle was found by police on the N2 between Cotswold and Stanford Road on Sunday evening.

“The keys were still in the ignition. The vehicle was impounded by police. After opening the case and been informed that his vehicle was in police custody, Payi wanted to withdraw the case.

Police suspect that when Payi got out of the vehicle, he had forgotten where he had parked,” Naidu said.

Payi was arrested on Tuesday and appeared in court yesterday. He was released on R200 bail and the case is remanded to March 30.
