A NURSE connected to a series of illegal abortions in Port Elizabeth made a brief appearance in the magistrate’s court yesterday for failing to adhere to her bail conditions.

Lulama Cabela, 30, was released on bail following her arrest last month when at least 25 foetuses were found in a freezer at a building in Govan Mbeki Avenue.

She was, however, arrested again at the weekend for contravening her bail conditions.

Cabela was placed under 24-hour house arrest when released on bail, but when police officers went looking for her on multiple occasions on Saturday she was not home.

Officers waited outside her house and arrested her when she showed up later that night.

She will be back in court today as her attorney could not be present yesterday.

The prosecution said they had been in contact with Cabela’s attorney, who had indicated he needed to place certain submissions on the record, and would be at court today.

In the meantime, Cabela will remain in custody and the state plans to oppose bail.

At this stage, Cabela faces 25 charges of concealment of birth, but more charges are expected to be added as the investigation progresses.
