PE hospital is first in SA to use dogs to help ease pain, emotional stress
IN a South African first, Life St George’s Hospital is using dogs to help seriously ill patients to heal.
Dog therapy aims to ease patient’s pain and alleviate the stress of a hospital stay.
Cedar Ward unit manager Sister Nicci Joubert said working in the ward was emotionally difficult.
“We mainly treat oncology patients,” she said. “I used to be a trauma nurse working in the emergency unit, so I had to change my approach to work radically,” she said.
She had realised that one of the biggest jobs was helping the patients and their families emotionally.
