A WEALTHY Nelson Mandela Bay business family, the Jeevas, have given Eastern Cape SACP boss Mzoleli Mrara until today to retract his claims and apologise for comparing the family to the infamous Guptas – or face a defamation lawsuit.

Attorney Andre Vlok said yesterday he had been instructed by Yossuf Jeeva to demand that Mrara withdraw his “scurrilous, unprovoked, baseless and irresponsible” comments.

Yesterday, Mrara said he could not comment until he had seen the letter.

Delivering the Mbuyiselo Ngwenda Memorial Lecture on Sunday, Mrara alleged that the Bay property magnates had co-opted and had the city’s tripartite alliance leaders in their pockets in a similar way to how the Guptas are said to have influence over President Jacob Zuma.

Vlok said the Jeevas’ business with the city was transparent and above board.
