THE Port Elizabeth High Court yesterday ratified a massive R1.5-million out-of-court settlement for the care of a traumatised Uitenhage mother whose young son was electrocuted while playing soccer in 2011.

A distraught Priscilla Mcwetyana, 52, who was speaking after the success of her second claim against the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, said she could not bear to attend proceedings in the Port Elizabeth High Court yesterday because, “the thought of reliving that day is too terrifying”.

Mcwetyana watched as her son Liyema, 5, was electrocuted in February 2011 when he came into contact with a wire fence which had become electrified by being exposed to live wiring installed by the municipality.

She was traumatised by the incident and, despite an earlier successful claim against the municipality, Mcwetyana now requires permanent care – the cost of which is to be covered by yesterday’s claim.

The Mandelaville community in Uitenhage had warned the municipality about the danger a week before the incident after a cow was electrocuted on the same fence.

According to Mcwetyana, on the day of the incident her son was playing soccer with friends.

He ran backwards to catch a ball and touched the fence.

Despite the success of her second claim, Mcwetyana said: “No amount of money will ever replace the memory of my child.
