A YOUNG woman who has been on the run for nine months since she escaped custody after being arrested in connection with her baby daughter’s death last year has been rearrested.

Lungiswa Tsengiwe, 28, had also been wanted in connection with her husband’s murder in Bhisho in 2013.

She was arrested in a North End shopping centre yesterday afternoon.

Police spokesman Captain Andre Beetge said detectives Constable Asanda Jack and Sergeant Kwezi Ndika had been following up leads in another case at Pier 14.

“By chance, they saw someone who looked like her [Tsengiwe] and decided to follow the woman,” Beetge said.

“Jack arrested her inside the Pier 14 shopping centre.

“We can confirm that she is the wanted suspect.”

Tsengiwe fled to Port Elizabeth after allegedly killing her husband in Bhisho in 2013.

Then, in February last year, she allegedly smothered her nine-month-old daughter in a plastic bag.

Police found the body in Tsengiwe’s home in Joe Slovo informal settlement following a tip-off.

Tsengiwe was arrested in May last year but managed to escape from Kwazakhele police the following month, allegedly with the help of a policeman who was seen on CCTV footage letting her out of her jail cell.

He was arrested and charged with corruption and aiding an escape.

Tsengiwe, who earned the nickname “chameleon” and was described as a “master of disguise” by police because she was always changing her appearance, is expected to appear in the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court in connection with her escape from custody and the baby’s murder tomorrow.

Arrangements will then be made to take her to Mthatha, where she faces charges of murdering her husband.
