The body of a fisherman was found submerged in the Gamtoos River near Patensie yesterday afternoon.

Moolman Gabha, who went missing on Saturday, failed to return home that evening prompting Port Elizabeth Police Search and Rescue together with the divers to launch a search.

Police spokesman Sergeant Majola Nkohli said: “Due to poor lighting, a search was launched on Sunday.

In the interim, his wife sent someone to the river to look for him. His [Gabha] clothes were found on the river bank.

“By midday Sunday divers had found his body submerged in the water, not far from where the clothes were found.

“He was fishing alone so it is not yet known what transpired.”

No evidence of foul play was found.

“The body was taken to the state mortuary where a postmortem would determine the exact cause of death,” Nkohli said.

An inquest case is being investigated.
