Inaugural honour, honorary doctorate on awards list

ALMOST 5 000 Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University students from six faculties will walk across the stage to receive their qualifications when NMMU hosts its first graduation session for this year.

The 15 ceremonies hosted at the George and Port Elizabeth campuses start on Thursday and will run until Tuesday April 19.

Two special awards will be presented: an honorary doctorate and the first NMMU Chancellor’s Medal.

Gift of the Givers’ Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, who was also honoured by Rhodes University at the weekend, will be the only recipient of an honorary doctorate from NMMU this year.

Nonprofit organisation The Maths Centre’s national executive director, Sharanjeet Shan, will receive the institution’s inaugural Chancellor’s Medal.

Both will receive their awards on Wednesday next week.

NMMU chancellor Santie Botha said the Chancellor’s Medal would be awarded annually to individuals who had made a “substantial contribution to society as a whole”.

“Their contribution can be through teaching, research and/or social engagement which has had a major positive impact on society at large,” Botha said.
