THE construction of RDP houses near Port Elizabeth’s Red Location Museum has ground to a complete halt.

The museum has been closed for almost two years because of protests over shoddily built RDP houses around it, as well as threats of violence against staff

The municipality eventually acceded to residents’ demands and R32-million was approved for 288 new houses last year.

But SMMEs in the area put a stop to construction on Monday, saying they were entitled to 25% of the project.

Ward 15 councillor Kholisile Frans said: “I tried to show them that closing the projects will not help and it is not the right thing to do. We agreed that the projects should continue.”
