Best of US encapsulated in centre
THE relationship between Eastern Cape-based South African and American citizens is set for a major boost with the launch of a new state-of-the-art creative centre yesterday.
The American Corner, Port Elizabeth, was unveiled to a distinguished audience which included the US consul general in Cape Town, Teddy B Taylor, and deputy vice-chancellor for research and engagement at NMMU Dr Andrew Leitch, at the university’s Bird Street campus.
The centre will focus on teaching students all there is to know about American culture, while assisting them in gaining access to quality and innovative educational opportunities abroad.
Leitch believes the launch of the centre will benefit students by opening their minds “to the possibilities that lie out there”.
“We are delighted to be able to host the American Corner here on our Bird Street campus,” Leitch said.
“It has the potential to impact the city through the rich cultural dialogue that will take place.”
The centre will house shelves full of literature on American culture, from the relationship between politics and the media, to the American justice system and much more.
This will be complemented by wireless technologies including Wi-Fi as well as laptops and tablets which can be used to research any topic specific to the student’s desired path.
