Zuma to launch War on Leaks programme in PE

President Jacob Zuma is expected to launch the government’s War on Leaks programme, which is designed to train 15 000 young people to curb water losses, in Port Elizabeth  on Friday (28/08/15).

During the State of the Nation Address (SONA) Zuma announced that the government would train 15 000 artisans or plumbers who will in turn fix leaking taps in their communities.

According to a press statement, water losses are said to be costing the country R7 billion a year.

The plan is to train these individuals over a period of three years and they will be trained in three phases.

  • phase one – 3000 in 2015/16,
  • phase two- 5000 in 2016/17 and
  • phase three- 7000 in 2017/18. 

Rand Water is the implementing agent on behalf of the Department of Water and Sanitation.

Zuma is expected to launch the War on Leaks programme in  Zwide, Port Elizabeth, early on Friday morning.
