SUDDEN STOP: The car that was hijacked yesterday
A HIJACKING in Uitenhage turned into chaos yesterday, with scenes reminiscent of the Wild West.
Two men held a couple at gunpoint as they unlocked their car in Acacia Street, Rosedale, at about 3pm.
Police spokesman Sergeant Majola Nkohli said: “They threatened to shoot the couple and demanded the car keys.
“The men then sped off and left the couple stranded at the side of the road.”
A witness told the police which way the men had gone, as well as the colour and registration of the VW Polo.
“A nearby police vehicle spotted the car and gave chase,” Nkohli said.
A K9 unit vehicle had set up a roadblock near the Provincial Hospital and as the suspects approached they opened fire on the police.
The police returned fire and the passenger was wounded.
The driver lost control of the car and it overturned.
He fled, but was tracked down and arrested several hours later.
“The passenger was arrested and taken to hospital under police guard,” Nkohli said.
“One of the suspected stolen firearms used in the shootout was also found inside the car.”
The men are due to appear in court on Monday.
