DOZENS of motorists were arrested for drunk-driving in Port Elizabeth at the weekend during an operation lasting eight hours.
An off-duty Port Elizabeth police captain was among the 52 arrested.
About 40 police officers and 81 traffic officers – from national and provincial traffic departments – took part in the joint operation between 2pm and 10pm on Sunday.
The campaign formed part of Operation Lockdown, aimed at clamping down on northern areas gang violence.
Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Danny Jordaan launched the clampdown operation on Sunday afternoon.
Provincial Traffic deputy director Charles Bramwell, who headed the operation, said focus areas included Bethelsdorp, Gelvandale, Algoa Park, Humewood, New Brighton and Motherwell.
“This is part of our clampdown to reduce and prevent road fatalities across the province,” he said.
“Similar joint law enforcement operations will [continue] in the metro, with a focus on reducing road deaths and enhancing the safety of motorists.”
Bramwell said some of the drivers were released on bail ranging from R1 000 to R3 000, while others were held overnight and appeared in magistrates’ courts today.
Police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said 153 people were also arrested in the Mount Road cluster for crimes including house robbery, burglary and murder.
