A UITENHAGE couple who allegedly neglected their six-weekold baby to the point where she died last month were denied bail in the KwaNobuhle Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
The 42-year-old mother and her 49-year-old partner face a charge of culpable homicide.
According to the police, the child had suffered from extreme malnutrition.
Police spokesman Sergeant Majola Nkohli said a relative had begged the parents to take her to a doctor, but they had refused.
“The relative eventually took the child to Laetitia Bam Day Hospital in Uitenhage and she was then transferred to Dora Nginza Hospital,” Nkohli said. She died in hospital on March 14.
A case of child neglect was opened, but following investigations the charge was changed to one of culpable homicide.
Station commander Colonel Zolani Xawuka said he hoped this case would serve as a stern warning to parents or guardians as to their responsibilities.
The case was postponed to May 27 for further investigation.
