A BILLION-rand railway line project to link Motherwell township with Swartkops is at risk of falling through if the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality continues to drag its feet.

The project, which involves a 7.8km line with three new stations, has been on the cards since 2008.

Metro transport portfolio committee chairwoman Babalwa Lobishe said the municipality had failed to take the matter seriously for years and had thus put the project in jeopardy.

The project had also been delayed by the taxi industry, which had refused to allow the project to continue.

It said previously that the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) would not be allowed to operate a new train route until an agreement was reached with the taxi industry.

At a transport committee meeting yesterday, Lobishe said Prasa had held several meetings with various municipal departments over the years, but it had not been expedited to the council for approval.

The council’s approval is needed to implement the project and start engagements with stakeholders and the public.
