University plans to deal with rape claims

A NUMBER of task teams have been set up at Rhodes University to look at the institution’s policies and processes when it comes to dealing with cases of sexual assault and rape. The university in Grahamstown has been rocked by four days of protests related to allegations of rape and sexual assault.

On Wednesday, five students were arrested during a tense standoff with Grahamstown police.

Speaking about the task teams, Rhodes vice-chancellor Dr Sizwe Mabizela said: “The first task team is looking comprehensively at current policies and processes [while] also looking at how to improve awareness of sexual violence and rape at the university.

“The second [task] team will assess the protocol and some important aspects need to be fine-tuned.”

He said that any victim of sexual violence should not be presented with huge hurdles to prove they had been a victim.
