A YOUNG Port Elizabeth man who allegedly shot at a motorist and his young children because he had refused to give him a lift, will stand trial in the Port Elizabeth High Court today.

The man also faces a murder charge over another shooting.

Marcus Malgas, 24, of Helenvale, faces one count of murder and eight of attempted murder.

It is alleged Malgas asked a fellow resident for a lift in November.

When Jonathan Davids refused, Malgas allegedly opened fire, accidentally shooting Trevor Ruiters, who had been standing nearby.

The state says Davids was reversing from his driveway in Reginald Road, Helenvale, at about 3pm on November 3, when Malgas approached him and asked for a lift.

“While Davids was driving in Reginald Road and away from [Malgas], he started shooting at Davids but struck Ruiters, who was standing up the road,” the charge sheet says.

Ruiters was treated in hospital for a minor wound.
