PEOPLE implicated in the jobs-for-cash teacher scam involving teacher union Sadtu have asked for an extension before Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga releases its damning findings.
The ministerial task team appointed to investigate allegations of corruption in the appointment of teachers will now wait for a further two weeks before the final report is released. “After consulting with the ministerial task team, I agreed to postpone the release of the report by 14 days,” Motshekga told the National Assembly.
“Therefore, the ministerial task team report will now be released around May 20. “It’s because of legal advice – not because of pressure.”
Motshekga was delivering her department’s budget vote in parliament yesterday. Sadtu has already threatened to haul the Department of Basic Education to court over its report on the union’s jobs-for-cash scam.
“The ministerial task team has submitted its final report to me, which I have processed through the cabinet,” Motshekga said.
“The cabinet recommended that we should develop a plan of action as the government’s response to the report, which should include wide consultations with relevant education stakeholders and partners. “I am pleased to report that much has been done since that initial announcement and we are close to being able to release the final report.”
DA MP Gavin Davis said he was disappointed that Motshekga had buckled under Sadtu pressure on Friday and postponed the release of the jobs-forcash report yet again.
