Ambitious workers’ party out to woo councillors to join its ranks

THE United Front (UF) is nipping at the heels of the ANC, trying to eat away at its current power base in Nelson Mandela Bay by wooing some of its councillors to cross over to the workers’ party. The party claims to be in talks with a significant number of ANC councillors, many of whom have not made the cut to return to the council after the August 3 elections.

Councillors from other political parties, including the DA, have also met with the UF in the hope of getting on to its councillor candidate list, according to the UF’s regional chairman, Sizwe Foley.

“People are meeting with us to weigh their options. Some people just want to get on the lists because they have not made the lists of their parties,” Foley said.

“We are in discussions with a significant grouping of ANC councillors.

“You must remember that half of the ANC’s caucus is not on the ANC’s list – they were not shortlisted. We are also talking to some who are shortlisted, those who are hopefuls to return.

“We don’t guarantee any positions to any councillors . . . The candidates will be decided by the people.”
