THE cabinet has expressed concern about parliamentary disruptions, which it said are increasing in frequency and intensity and announced that leader of government Cyril Ramaphosa will be tackling the issue.
President Jacob Zuma’s last two visits to parliament have been characterised by violence as the EFF attempted to stop him from speaking.
Clashes between party members and security ensued on both occasions as EFF members were expelled.
Addressing the media yesterday, Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe said cabinet had deliberated on the matter and that Ramaphosa, leader of government business, would be making a full statement on the issue at a later stage. Parliament rises this week for 10 weeks ahead of the August 3 local government poll.
In November 2014, after a series of similar clashes involving the EFF, Ramaphosa attempted to broker a truce between opposition leaders. That truce fell apart days later.
Further, Radebe said the cabinet had not yet received a report-back from ministers tasked with engaging banks on the closure of the Gupta family’s accounts.
Radebe also said the cabinet had not discussed Sunday Times reports that Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula had smuggled a young Burundian woman into the country on board a state jet.
