Firefighters continued to battle a massive blaze on the mountain above the N2 national road near Grahamstown on Wednesday morning.
The fire burning along the N2 itself has been more or less contained‚ according to police spokeswoman Captain Mali Govender.
But it is now roaring along through the valley heading in the direction of Port Alfred‚ she said.
Firefighters and emergency vehicles are on the scene.
The fire is believed to have started around midnight.
Mountain View Manor‚ a guesthouse perching on about 7ha on the top of the mountain‚ had a narrow escape.
Guesthouse owner Victor Banks says that the fire burned part of his land but the buildings had escaped any damage.
“I woke up at about 3.30am and we were surrounded by fire as far as the eye could see. The fire department was already here with its vehicles.”
He said by 11am on Wednesday morning he could see the fire roaring up the side of the mountain on the other side of the valley to his guesthouse‚ heading in the direction of Port Alfred.
The fire is being fuelled by a brisk berg wind. It is predicted the wind will drop on Wednesday afternoon but will pick up again on Thursday.
