Members of the public were evacuated from the Home Affairs offices in East London after a man collapsed and died inside on Thursday.
Police cordoned off the entrance and the body had not been removed at the time of publication.
Home Affairs regional spokesperson Ngenisile Stuurman said the 47-year-old man had visited the office for an ID application.
Stuurman said a family member has indicated that the deceased suffered from tuberculosis.
