The African National Congress Women’s League has called for gender equality in mayoral positions in the August 3 local government elections.
“One of the most critical successes of the ANCWL has been its call within the structures of the ANC that women must be represented on a 50/50 basis. The first success was the adoption of the 50/50 policy by the ANC after many years of ANCWL campaigning and mobilising for such a policy‚” said ANCWL secretary general Meokgo Matuba.
“As the leader in the emancipation of women in [South Africa]‚ the ANCWL will continue to fight and remind the ANC to not compromise the 50/50 policy in deploying cadres for mayoral positions in Metropolitans‚ District and Local Municipalities of South Africa. The deployment of women in major metropolitans or in decision-making positions remains at the top of the agenda of the ANCWL.
“The ANCWL wishes to remind the ANC of the capabilities of women wherever they have been deployed‚” added Matuba.
