The National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) Jeffreys Bay and Francis Bay stations assisted in bringing to shore “a 37-year-old Port Elizabeth fisherman suffering chest pains suspected to be from a heart attack” in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Jeffreys Bay station commander Rieghard Janse van Rensburg said the request for support came at 2.45am‚ and the sea rescue craft Eddie Beaumont II was launched in an “attempt to rendezvous with the fishing boat Umfana at sea to render medical assistance”.

The NSRI’s St Francis Bay medical crew and Private Care ambulance services were on standby at the Port of St Francis‚ which the Eddie Beaumont II and Umfana reached at the same time.

“The patient was stabilised at the Port of St Francis and he has been transported to hospital by Private Care ambulance in a stable condition‚” Van Rensburg said.

“It has been confirmed from hospital today that the patient is in a satisfactory condition and remains in hospital awaiting medical tests results.”
