AS Celeste Nurse cuddled her newborn bundle of joy at Groote Schuur Hospital, she was befriended by a woman in the ward, who offered to watch the infant while the exhausted mom took a nap.
When she awoke, her two-day-old baby was gone.
In February, almost 18 years later, mother and daughter were reunited and the mysterious woman – who had allegedly raised the stolen child as her own – was arrested.
Details of Zephany Nurse’s abduction in 1997 were included in an indictment handed to the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
The woman, who cannot be named, appeared in court, where the matter was postponed to the high court.
A date for the high court trial has still to be set.
